Fertility testing for gay men at our Indianapolis fertility center can help patients understand their fertility and reproductive potential. These tests can include a semen analysis, genetic testing and a hormone evaluation. In some cases, the doctor may recommend additional tests.
Genetic testing. If the semen analysis reveals a low sperm count, or the absence of sperm in semen not due to a blockage, chromosomal abnormalities may be to blame. Genetic testing can provide insight into this potential issue. It can also help determine whether the patient has a genetic condition that could pass to their children.
Specialized exams. If initial testing reveals potential fertility issues that require additional analysis, the doctor might suggest specialized exams. Some examples include the hypo-osmotic swelling test, sperm penetration assay, human zona pellucida binding test and computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA).
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI, consists of a specialist injecting a single live sperm into the center of a mature egg. This treatment can be helpful for patients with fertility challenges.
Microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration, or MESA, involves a doctor collecting semen from the coiled tube lying behind and above each testicle. Fertility specialists often recommend this treatment for patients who can produce sperm but cannot ejaculate it.
With the support of the specialists at our Indianapolis fertility center, gay patients can take the next step towards fulfilling their dream of taking home a healthy baby. Contact us to learn more about our fertility services.

The calls came the day after a gay sperm donor lost his legal battle in the High Court for guardianship of a child after he donated sperm to a lesbian couple. They echoed the High Court judge's plea for "urgent" action on the issue.
Last night, Fine Gael's children spokesperson, Alan Shatter, said the High Court decision highlighted the need to urgently enact legislation to address the social and legal dilemmas that result from assisted reproduction.
"The fact that the man in this case, known as A, is a sperm-donor in no way lessens the fact that he is the child's father and that the child has a right to know his father and to have some measure of contact with his father," he said.
"Providing a legal framework recognising lesbian and gay parents in this situation could help avoid this type of case in future, and the emotion and trauma to which the parents in this case have been involved," he said.

Stonewall has released the first guide advising gay men on how to become a father. A Guide for Gay Dads provides practical and legal advice on various routes to fatherhood including adoption, co-parenting, surrogacy, sperm donation and foster care.
The guide, which seeks to bring clarity to the complex social and legal issues surrounding gay parenthood, follows the publication of research on 'Different Families', commissioned by Stonewall and carried out by the University of Cambridge. The research suggested same-sex parents provide a comparable quality of upbringing to that received by children raised in heterosexual relationships.
Chief Executive of Stonewall, Ben Summerskill, said on the release of the guide: 'There's never been a better time for gay men to start a family in Britain. The law is now on their side. And this comprehensive new guide - the first of its kind specifically aimed at gay men - outlines all options, with handy tips and places to go for further support. We hope it'll convince some gay men who might have otherwise written off the prospect of raising children to re-consider'.
The guide, sponsored by the London Sperm Bank, sits alongside the group's Pregnant Pause publication, which provides similar advice to potential lesbian mothers. The charity is anxious same-sex parents are not put off having children. Communications officer, Gary Nunn, said: 'In the year ending 21 March 2010, just 60 of the 3,200 children who were adopted went to gay male couples', he explained. 'This has doubled since 2007, but it's still less than two percent'.
International surrogacy has become big news. Last month, a landmark international commercial surrogacy case, Re L, attracted front page national headlines. Hard on its heels the media spotlight fell on the birth of Elton John and David Furnish's US surrogate born son, Zachary, on Christmas Day. This has fuelled the debate about surrogacy and the question is why has it generated such attention?...

The first parenthood show for gay and single people was held on Saturday in London. The Alternative Families Show featured seminars about fertility treatment, adoption, surrogacy and other options for starting a family...
'Cutting Edge goes behind the headlines to intimately portray how gay millionaires Tony and Barrie Drewitt-Barlow's determination to have more children has affected them and their kids' said the teaser on the Channel 4 website. If I hadn't known this programme involved surrogacy, I would have dismissed it as yet another reality show about out-of-control children...
New legislation allowing same-sex couples to become the legal parents of children born following surrogacy will come into force next week. The change to the law means that couples using surrogacy no longer need to be married to be named on their child's birth certificate and is intended to afford unmarried and same-sex couples using any form of assisted reproduction the same rights to legal parenthood. It forms the final stage of the implementation of the UK's Human Fertilisati... 041b061a72
